Features of Concrete Driveways

Generally, a driveway is a private road used to access buildings or sites on a property. Typically a concrete driveway leads to a house, garage or carport.

There are many elements to consider when constructing a new driveway. Concreting Sydney have been building driveways for over 40 years. With our experience building driveways in Sydney, let’s take a look at some of the features of a concrete driveway by using each letter in the word driveway to create words that highlight this. These are some of the elements that Concreting Sydney incorporates when constructing your new concrete driveway:

Design of a driveway balances both practicality and aesthetics. A driveway is a focal point that mergers the design of your home and its surrounding landscape. Size and layout is relative to space needed and ease of usability.

Road to utilise your property. When building a new concrete driveway, there is a detailed construction process like other forms of road building with the difference is having a customised area to suit your needs. After the planning and design process, excavation can begin to prepare the area. Formwork and steel fixing is then completed in preparation for concreting your new driveway.

Increase the value of your home. A concrete driveway will improve the street appeal of your home. One of the first things a buyer sees when inspecting your home is your driveway. A concrete driveway that compliments the property sets a positive tone when selling. A well designed and constructed driveway extends living space. A concrete driveway acts as a bridge between your indoor and outdoor spaces and improves the convenience of your home.

Vehicle access to property. Concrete is strong and durable, it can handle the heavy weight of your car and is an ideal material for driveways. A concrete driveway is designed to handle vehicle traffic use and will not change in shape. A concrete driveway can also be designed to incorporate parking spaces to create more room for extra vehicles, boats, caravans and trailers.

Entrance to make use of your property. When planning for a new concrete driveway, there are numerous access points created that move you from one point to another seamlessly. New driveway design makes access from the street to your property easy. Driveways are also part of the passage to enter your front door. Driveways can be shaped to link the entrance of your home with the driveway. Furthermore, driveways can be constructed to include a concrete footpath to connect to your front door.

Weather conditions demonstrate versatility of concrete. Concrete being a hard surface performs well in all types of weather. Concrete gives you the ability to access and use your property no matter the weather. A concrete driveway gives you a clean surface to walk on in wet and dry weather. Concrete limits dust, dirt and mud from entering your home. Concrete driveways make the upkeep of your property an easier task.

Appearance of concrete is personalised. Getting a new concrete driveway gives you the opportunity to create a unique look for your property. Concrete is flexible in appearance choices. From plain concrete, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate concrete to decorative patterned concrete; the combination of textures, colours, stones and patterns available gives the opportunity in creating a pleasant and inviting look.

Year after year of service. The processes involved in concrete driveway construction create a durable, functional, and attractive area that can be appreciated for many years. The strength and longevity of driveways built with concrete results in minimal maintenance and greater ability to utilise your property.

Driveway Repair

Concrete driveways can be repaired. Driveway repair work is a good option if partial sections of the driveway only need restoration. Generally, council approval is not needed for a driveway fix. At Concreting Sydney, we do concrete driveway repairs and can fix broken driveways.

Depending on your insurance policy, driveway repair can be covered. In most cases driveway insurance usually covers for sudden unexpected events only, such as a tree falling on the driveway after a severe storm.

Residential driveway repair before selling your house is a good option. As the driveway is a prominent feature of your home, an unsightly and unsafe driveway will be used by potential buyers as a bargaining chip on property price.

Repairing an industrial driveway is a suitable option where limiting driveway downtime is important. An industrial driveway serves many purposes in running a factory or commercial premises.

The constant beating of trucks, trailers and heavy loads on the concrete can wear down and shorten the longevity of an industrial driveway. If the industrial driveway is not designed to handle heavy weight, concrete can sink, shift or crumble away. An industrial driveway in these states can create a hazardous work environment.

Forklifts can jump over uneven concrete surfaces making an unsafe passage for the forklift operator. Also a sunken industrial driveway can impact with services under the concrete such as gas and water. If disturbed, this can cause a flow on of disruption in business operations.

An industrial driveway does not need to be fixed in one go as this can be a lengthy process. An industrial driveway can be repaired in stages, with the most important areas addressed first.

Loading bays are usually the priority for industrial driveway repair. Receiving and dispatching goods at all hours of the day, the quality and design of the concrete in this space is crucial in running a business efficiently.

How to repair driveway damage is sometimes unrelated to the performance of the concrete. Homeowners seeking to fix a driveway may need to address other issues before concrete driveway repairs.

Driveway damaged by tree roots is common in some parts of Sydney. A driveway lifted by tree roots creates a tripping hazard. If the existing concrete does not have reinforcement mesh, it is more likely that a vigorous tree root over time will crack and raise the concrete into many sharp and unstable pieces. A driveway repair tree roots plan may involve assessing how to mitigate tree root influence and possible slight relocation of the concrete driveway repair.

Residential driveway repair is sometimes due to a leaking or broken pipe underneath the concrete. Over time the leaking water can erode the sub base underneath the concrete. Hollow voids can be created by the erosion and cause the concrete to sink. Repairing driveway in these circumstances is more prominently found on sloped blocks where sub base erosion can accelerate if it extends to the concrete driveway edge. This creates a channel for the erosion to continue away from the concrete.

As residential driveways are smaller in scale compared with industrial driveways, if there are a lot of sections of the driveway required to replace, it may indicate the general condition of the concrete to be in a poor state. In this scenario, driveway repair vs replacement needs to be considered. Driveway repair cost may be similar between the two options.

Replacing footpaths can also be done with replacing sections of the driveway. Replacing and adjusting footpaths at the same time will usually provide a permanent footpath and driveway fix, with no further concrete maintenance needed.

Hornsby Council Driveway

Concreting Sydney is your concreters for the Hornsby area. Concreting Sydney are Hornsby able concrete contractors that can carry out works on both public and private properties within the Hornsby shire.

As Hornsby Council concrete contractors, Concreting Sydney are authorised to complete road work and concrete driveway work on Hornsby Council land. Hornsby Council has special criteria for their concrete infrastructure; we are highly experienced and certified to meet Hornsby Council standards. We are concreters Hornsby area for 40 years, our local knowledge and partnership with Hornsby Council gets your project speedily completed.

Our residential concrete Hornsby work is where we do most of our Hornsby Council driveways. A Hornsby Council driveway technically is called a Hornsby Shire Council vehicular crossing. In general the terms mean the same thing; however as part of the Hornsby council driveway application process, Hornsby Council refers to this as a vehicular crossing in short.

Hornsby council defines the vehicular crossing as the footway area between the road kerb and the property boundary where a vehicle can access a property.

The road kerb is the raised block of concrete that separates the road height from nature strip or verge height. The property boundary is where the private property meets the council owned property.

In some instances, a new layback has to be built in addition to the vehicular crossing. A section of the kerb is removed and replaced with a concrete ramp that makes it easy for vehicle access.

The layback is also referred to as the gutter crossing. The gutter is where the edge of the road is separated from the road kerb with a narrow strip of concrete. The layback acts as a connection point between the gutter and vehicular crossing. The initial meeting point between the gutter and the layback is technically called the invert; as it is the first contact point for vehicles to drive onto the vehicular crossing, it is the lowest part of the layback.

The role of the gutter is to collect and divert water runoff from the road. Together with the road kerb, it acts as a barrier to limit water runoff onto the nature strip as well as onto private properties. The gutter provides a passage for water runoff to be redirected usually into stormwater drains.

completed charcoal colour vehicular crossing for hornsby council

The objective of Hornsby Council crossings engineers is to maintain vehicular crossing consistency across the Hornsby Shire. Hornsby council driveway specifications aim to create safe and easy vehicular access to internal parking spaces within a property.

To get your Hornsby council driveway crossing built, a Hornsby council driveway application is needed as your vehicular crossing will be built on Hornsby council owned land. Even though the driveway vehicular crossing is on council owned land, building a new concrete driveway crossover is primarily the responsibility of the property owner (NSW Roads Act 1993 – Sect 218 and 219).

As Concreting Sydney is part of the Hornsby Council concrete contractors team, we take care of all aspects of the Hornsby council driveway application and driveway construction. We are authorised by Hornsby council to submit the Hornsby council driveway application on behalf of property owners. As part of the Hornsby driveway application we prepare and submit relevant site specific information that is needed by Hornsby Council to process the application.

During the Hornsby Council driveway application approval process, a Hornsby Council crossings engineer will design driveway levels and create a site specific vehicular crossover plan incorporating relevant council driveway specifications.

Once written permission is granted by Hornsby Council’s Design and Construction Branch, excavation work can then commence.

Building Concrete Driveway Crossovers

concrete driveway with layback for new home in ryde

If your concrete driveway project requires a new concrete crossover driveway, this can be done at the same time when building your concrete driveway that is inside your property.

Driveway crossovers are also known as vehicular crossings. Most local councils in Sydney use either phrase.

There is also a growing trend for concrete driveway crossovers to be wider. A wider concrete crossover driveway makes it easier to steer a vehicle when entering and exiting a property.

A crossover driveway can also be built for an existing home to improve vehicular access to a property. If there is an existing serviceable concrete driveway crossover for the property, this can be used without the need for building a new concrete driveway crossover.

Concrete Parramatta Council for example has different crossover driveway requirements to Concrete Hornsby Council, Concrete Ku-ring-gai Council and Concrete Ryde Council.

All of these local councils are in close proximity to each other however vary greatly. As a concreter in Sydney for 40 years, we can guide you for your particular council concrete driveway crossover requirements. Our service takes care of all the council DA processes when building a concrete driveway crossover.

We also design and build concrete driveway crossovers that suit the terrain of your property. This is particularly important for Hornsby Council as this region has a varied hilly terrain. We can excavate your crossover driveway to improve vehicular access on slope blocks. Hornsby Council’s vehicular crossing designs are unique to other parts of Sydney concrete.

Ku-ring-gai Council has developed characteristics in line with the bushland environment of the Ku-ring-gai Council region, which can include wide crossover driveways for larger blocks. In most cases, it is designed to be in balance with the bush landscape. Ku-ring-gai Council do not have kerb and gutter for the road as well as council footpath concrete. This has created the effect where most properties front yard lawn extends all the way to the road enhancing the bushland feel. Most homeowners prefer minimal kerb and gutter for crossover driveways, it is seen as a way to maintain the bush and vegetation character of the region.

Parramatta Council has implemented that the crossover to be more standardised throughout the local government area. A new concrete Parramatta driveway layback is usually constructed to minimise the steepness of the concrete crossover driveway. Note a driveway layback is a narrow concrete ramp that connects the road to your concrete crossover driveway. The concrete driveway layback section is incorporated into the road kerb and gutter. Parramatta Council prefers the driveway layback wings to be much larger. This design feature creates more space to manoeuvre your vehicle from different angles into and out of the crossover driveway. The driveway design looks at minimising the height difference of the road and crossover driveway. This is important for all concrete driveway crossovers as this can minimise certain vehicles scrapping.

Ryde Council’s crossovers have different options depending on the location in the Ryde Council district. All types of terrain can be found in Ryde. Parts of Ryde such as Denistone have narrow and hilly blocks. We look at minimising the steepness of driveway crossovers, this usually involves excavation of concrete that lowers the height of the original driveway crossover. Denistone driveways can also involve landscaping surrounding areas from the new concrete driveway crossover. The surrounding lawn for example may be much higher than the new concrete driveway crossover that you have to step up and onto the lawn. We can excavate surrounding areas from the driveway crossover to blend and match the height of the driveway crossover to improve the usability of your property.

Denistone driveways usually have a narrow concrete driveway crossovers. This concrete driveway design feature is to create more on-street parking spaces. Wider concrete driveway crossovers create less on-street parking spaces. In comparison Marsfield are designed quite differently from Denistone. Marsfield is generally flatter than Denistone. As Marsfield has much wider blocks than Denistone, we have more flexibility with concrete construction in Marsfield. Concrete driveway crossovers tend to be wider for concreters Marsfield projects as many properties have large garages. A wider driveway crossover makes it easier to align your vehicle to park inside the garage.

As concreters in Sydney, we have built concrete driveway crossovers all over Sydney with different characteristics and design elements. If your driveway project needs a new crossover, layback, kerb and gutter as well, we can construct all in one time for a complete concreting service.

Ready Mix Concrete Sydney

A common question asked by homeowners to Concreting Sydney is do you mix the concrete onsite?

Concrete mixed onsite is a dedicated manufacturing process which is separate from pouring and finishing concrete. Concrete mixed onsite involves manual labour, material transportation, concrete mixing machinery and equipment. In urban settings it is more efficient to use ready mixed concrete, also known as RMC. Ready-mixed concrete is cost efficient with less labour needed on a jobsite. Ready mix concrete production is spread across dedicated hubs throughout the city.

There are numerous concrete plants that supplies ready mix concrete to Sydney. A concrete order is placed with the nearest concrete plant from the worksite. The prepared concrete is then delivered with a concrete truck. The concrete truck has a large mixing bowl that can hold, mix and discharge the concrete.

ready mix concrete truck ready for batching order

Ready mix concrete manufacturing plays a major role in concrete construction. Readymixed concrete facilitates efficiency in the construction industry as it is a just in time product that is delivered when needed with exacting quality and quantity. Ready-mixed concrete is delivered onsite already mixed and ready for pouring. Ready mix concrete is advantageous as it speeds up construction time and reduces labour costs.

Ready mix concrete manufacturing is a process of producing concrete to a specified job order. Also known as batching, concrete is produced in measured batches. Ready mix concrete products are manufactured by combining cement, aggregates, sand, water and admixtures (minerals and chemicals) in a controlled environment.

A ready mix concrete supplier has the facilities to stock a large amount of raw materials. The raw materials are individually stored and then mixed in specific quantities as ready mix concrete is ordered by volume.

Ready mix concrete is manufactured under controlled processes as materials are weigh batched to maintain consistency and quality. Ready mix concrete manufacturing is mostly an automated process. Machines measure weight, cement ratio, moisture content as well as dosages for admixtures. This all ensures batched concrete is of consistent high quality.

Materials used for ready mixed concrete is routinely checked for quality and physical characteristics. For a concrete order or batch, materials are sent to the mixing drum via conveyor belts or bucket elevator. Cement is conveyed from silos to the mixing drum. Once the combined weight of the entire materials meet a specific order amount, the weighing hopper door is opened and materials are mixed in the concrete mixer, this is done with machinery automatically.

Once materials have all been mixed, the concrete mixer loading door opens. The batched concrete flows into an awaiting concrete truck.

A concrete mix supplier can provide a variety of options from an order of small batch concrete to special grade concrete batching; ready mix concrete supplies come in a wide range.

N Grade (normal) concrete is ready mix concrete used on most jobsites. N grade concrete is standardised mixes and is based on the type of strength needed for a particular application. S (Special) Grade concrete is ready-mix concrete batched for a specialty application. An example is marine concrete where the performance of the concrete has to meet specific site requirements.

A ready mix concrete plant also supplies stabilised sands. This is sand combined with cement to provide a hardened fill material. This is commonly used for backfilling in road works to allow minimal disruption of road use.

Ready mix concrete is the go to choice for concrete construction in Sydney. Below are some of the benefits of ready mix concrete:

- Ready mix concrete removes the need for storing materials and concrete mixing equipment onsite creating a less cluttered jobsite.

- A ready mix concrete supplier reduces waste via bulk handling and mixing practices.

- A concrete mix supplier stores cement in specialty silos which minimises dust.

- A ready mix concrete plant uses mechanised equipment to maintain consistent quality. Ready mix concrete manufacturing uses various monitoring and process methods.

- Concrete manufacturing can easily cater for producing different grades of concrete in small or large quantities.

- Speeds up construction time with less labour needed.

- Placing of concrete happens immediately as ready mix concrete is a ready to go product.

Concrete can be shaped and designed to suit your home. Driveways can be moulded to different shapes and sizes to get the most out of your outdoor space.

As concrete is a custom building experience other architectural elements of your home can be complemented or matched with. We can also create a custom design with your ideas. We aim to get your driveway built to get the most out of your property.

Driveway concreting comes in many options such as plain concrete, coloured concrete and decorative concrete.

Driveways in plain concrete usually is a more practical option. A driveway in plain concrete is the traditional look. Plain concrete is also optioned to create a minimalist look for modern homes.

Driveways are also available in a wide range of concrete colours. Usually to match the colour scheme of your home. It makes such a difference to your home aesthetically and it improves the overall presentation of your home.

Concreting a drive with colour concrete is where the colour is pre-mixed into the concrete. The colour is added to the concrete before it is delivered onsite. There is no need to add additional colour during pouring. Colour concreting with this method is a good option as the colour is all the way thru the concrete. This ensures the longevity of the colour.

Colour concreting is great as you get to pick a colour for your driveway for a custom look. The concrete colour chosen can emphasis the driveway or can highlight your home. These are usually the main two considerations and can assist in deciding which colour to choose for your driveway.

The chosen concrete colour is ordered specifically for your driveway prior to pouring. At Concreting Sydney we have a large range of colours to choose from to get the right look for your home.

Building driveways is usually associated with concreters who have many years of experience in the industry. Driveways have many types of concrete construction and finishing methods. For complete driveway implementation, an experience concreter professional can incorporate many structural, practical and decorative concrete options.

Combining these elements creates unique driveway results tailored to suit your property. Driveway design is flexible. It achieves a custom end result as you can include as many concrete design elements as needed.

Concrete for your driveway can incorporate other features on your property. Designs tends to suit the characteristics of your land. It can also include designing concrete to complement your garden. Creating a flower bed around a driveway adds an architectural element and is one of many ideas that you can include.

The concrete for the driveway acts as a garden bed. The driveway edge eliminates the need to box up a garden bed with timber. This creates a cleaner garden bed look. Plants are more prominent as they can be landscaped to match with the level of the drive.

Garden beds for plants are usually located near the front door to soften the entrance. Another commonplace for a driveway edge gap is along the fence line. A concrete edge works well along a sunny fence line as most plants like a sunny position to grow. A driveway edge plays an important part to differentiate different landscape elements.

A concrete driveway edge provides an outline for your lawn. The edge stops your lawn spreading to other parts of the garden. A concrete edge gives your lawn its own space for it to grow and this helps create a robust lawn. It also speeds up mowing time.

A concrete edge acts as a border so you are only cutting the lawn with the mower. The edge can be designed to be higher or lower than your lawn cutting height. Most people preference the edge to be a little higher than the lawn cutting height. A driveway edge built this way helps keep dirt off the concrete drive. This is especially the case during wet weather. It is a simple and effective barrier.

During construction, the layout is marked out to build the body of the drive. A benefit of building with concrete is that the layout of the driveway can be changed during the construction phase. We can reposition the layout onsite so you can decide what works best.

This is part of the personalised building experience that you get with concrete. Driveways are built to suit your property and lifestyle needs. As the majority of the building process is onsite, concrete gives you a high level of customisation compared with other materials.

Style-wise, concrete driveways tend to be built to suit and enhance the appearance of homes. Driveways vary greatly from one home to another and usually address site-specific needs. Driveways are sometimes influenced by the nature of the land it is built on. Most of the time concrete driveways are influenced by the prominent colours on your home.

Building a drive needs thorough planning. With concreting driveways, most of the planning is done prior to pouring of concrete. When concreting a drive there is a limited time to pour and finish concrete. There are unique skill requirements when concreting driveways. Our experience will provide the expertise for your next project.

Plain Concrete to Coloured Concrete in Sydney

charcoal coloured driveway designed for white coloured home

Sydney concrete designs vary greatly between the regions. Sydney concrete design is influenced by the varied landscape and architecture that can be found in Sydney. From the hilly topography in the Hills District, federation style homes on the North Shore and to the large modern homes of Western Sydney, concrete gives flexibility in design options.

As driveway specialist concreters for over 40 years, Concreting Sydney has designed thousands of concrete solutions. A benefit of concrete construction is that concrete can be shaped and styled in a multitude of ways. Creating a design brief for us concreters is exploring the different options to create a plan that suits the layout and look of your home.

In driveway and concrete design, traditionally was focused on structural purpose and improved practicality. The introduction of concrete colouring gave us concreters the flexibility in designing driveways to blend aesthetically with its surrounds.

Prior to the introduction of concrete colouring, driveway finishes where based on the natural grey colour of concrete.

Cement colours basically come in varying shades of grey. Building concrete driveways up until the late 80’s in Sydney was for the most part with traditional grey concrete or also known as plain concrete.

Designing concrete driveways on the North Shore for us concreters usually is in plain concrete. With all the different driveway options available, plain concrete is still a popular in the northern suburbs.

Plain concrete works well on the North Shore as it maintains the traditional presentation style of properties. The Lower North Shore makes use of plain concrete more greatly than the upper North Shore. Projects in Chatswood are usually designed with plain concrete. Concreting Sydney has designed more plain concrete driveways in Chatswood than any other locality on the North Shore.

The ornate brickwork of many homes on the North Shore channels design as a driveway renovation. Plain concrete is used as it is a subtle driveway finish. Plain or grey concrete keeps the emphasis on the façade of your home and makes brickwork visually stand out.

Interestingly, driveways in the Hills District is split between traditional plain concrete driveways and decorative concrete driveways. With many new homes built in the late 80’s in the Hills District, designing concrete driveways for us concreters at this time focused on layout. Colour concrete finishes for driveways in Sydney where yet to emerge, design focused on utilising space as many homes in the Hills District where built on large blocks.

Building construction in the Hills District at this time was when home footprint sizes began to expand in Sydney; it was the predecessor and influenced large home design of Western Sydney. Typically concrete driveway design for large homes is based on decorative finishes.

The Hills District is unique in that large homes can be found with plain concrete driveways. A legacy of this concrete and homebuilding design period is new driveways in the Hills District are often designed with plain concrete. It is still common in Baulkham Hills to build driveways in plain concrete. This preference is due to many homes in Baulkham Hills where built just prior to the introduction of coloured concrete in Sydney.

Influence of The Hills District, Parklea, Glenwood and Ryde on Driveway Design

terracotta pattern driveway

Concrete driveways have taken a greater role in the presentation of homes. Driveways in Sydney at a time were associated with the grey colour of traditional plain concrete. Driveways are commonly built with concrete as it is a practical and durable material.

As concreters for 40 years, we have seen concrete driveway design progress from essentially a functional space to where driveways are now seen as a design element in the presentation of your property.

Plain concrete being naturally grey in colour is the traditional look of concrete. Plain concrete is a timeless finish with a utilitarian appearance. Plain concrete can work as an aesthetic design element, however today there are a multitude of decorative finishes that you can use to easily blend with your home and landscape design.

Concrete driveways in Sydney aesthetically became more prominent in the early 90’s. The Hills District, Parklea and Glenwood now part of the North West Sydney region, where the pioneering areas for decorative concrete.

Decorative concrete became the go to choice for residential concreting. With the high volume of new home construction in the Hills District as well as the residential development of North West Sydney at the time, new home owners in this period where at the forefront in optioning custom decorative driveway design.

Designing a driveway became an extension of the new home construction process. New home owners in this period leaned towards driveway options that carried over the characteristics of their home building design.

The concrete designer driveway period was born. Driveway aesthetic designs in this period leaned towards brick pattern driveways that resembled the brickwork style of the home. Colouring was also based on the brickwork colour of the home.

Driveway colours such as brick red, burgundy, sandstone, sandy beige and terracotta were well liked during this driveway design period. In contrast, a green colour concrete driveway although not common was seen as a way to differentiate from the common favorites.

Uniquely, driveways in Ryde was where the majority of green coloured concrete construction projects were completed. The preference for green coloured concrete sets Ryde apart in concrete design.

The suburbs surrounding Ryde such as West Ryde, Denistone, Denistone East, Denistone West, Eastwood and Marsfield have the highest concentration of green coloured concrete driveways in Sydney.

Understanding how the Ryde area developed this preference for green coloured concrete is difficult to pinpoint as it was different to the driveway design preferences of the time.

Historically Ryde was an agricultural district. This agricultural past of Ryde is evident today in the greenness of parks and open spaces compared with other localities in Sydney. Continuing with the green theme, the origins of the Granny Smith apple came from within the Ryde district in Eastwood.

Another nod to the past is Ryde Council and its use of green colour in signage and infrastructure throughout the Ryde local government area. The Ryde district and its affinity for the colour green go hand in hand with its historical past and geographical features.

Ryde has left its mark on concrete design language in Sydney.

Our residential concrete work in Ryde is where driveway finishes are more flexible. Driveway finishes inside the property boundary can include decorative or coloured concrete.

A coloured concrete driveway is a popular option. Coloured concrete like a charcoal driveway or black driveway can be done in the Ryde district. In contrast to a charcoal and black driveway is green coloured concrete. Green coloured concrete is popular for driveway concreting in Ryde. Whereas black concrete is the go to choice in other parts of Sydney, this is not the case in Ryde where green colour concrete is more popular than black concrete.

Our concreter Ryde projects is where the most green coloured concrete is used in Sydney.

Concrete Driveways Hills District

In our Baulkham Hills concrete projects, driveway finishes is split between plain concrete and decorative concrete. Our Baulkham Hills projects are unique for driveway construction as there is no driveway finish that is more popular than another.

plain concrete driveway extension for added car space

During a concrete driveway quote, homeowners tell us they want to build a driveway before the house is put up for sale. This is common in Baulkham Hills as many homes have basic driveways which have limited kerb appeal. Another popular time for driveway construction is for growing families.

As many existing concrete driveways in the Hills District where built at a time when narrow driveways were popular, narrow driveways are now being removed. Narrow driveways do not suit with modern families.

Concrete driveway repair is possible, however for our Baulkham Hills projects, existing narrow style driveways are removed. Most homeowners see this as an opportunity to get a coloured concrete driveway designed with extra space and styled to suit the home.

In the Hills District, coloured concrete driveways are popular. Many homeowners choose a charcoal driveway.

Charcoal driveways are chosen in the Hills District as this is a subtle concrete colour. It suits well for driveways in the Hills District. Black concrete driveways are not as common for our concreting Hills projects.

There are also numerous driveway finishes for charcoal concrete. Cove finish is popular in the Hills District as it provides grip.

With young children, a coloured concrete driveway in cove finish, provides a slip resistant surface for children to walk and play on. This is one of the best concrete driveway options for families. A cove finish provides adequate grip as commonly found with plain concrete driveways. During a driveway quote, we can recommend if a colour cove finish suits for your driveway and lifestyle.

With driveway builds in the Hills District, usually includes a concrete bay area. A concrete bay area can be incorporated as part of the overall driveway design. A concrete bay area is usually located close to the front building alignment. Another popular place for bay areas is in front of the garage or carport.

As most of our Hills District projects involve driveway excavation of narrow driveways, this makes it a good time to re-evaluate driveway needs and incorporate extra space where needed. A concrete bay area gives you extra space as well as provide a visual design addition to the front of your property.

As driveways in the Hills District are replaced by larger and more prominent designs; this makes coloured concrete driveways well suited in these types of settings.

A bay area, makes interacting with your vehicle easier. A wide driveway also makes it easier to park two cars side by side on a clean surface. A driveway in this style makes it easier to load and unload goods from your vehicle. A wide coloured concrete driveway is a simple addition that you will enjoy on a daily basis.

A wide coloured concrete driveway also makes use of the outdoor space as many Hills District homes have. Many Hills projects are on properties with wide boundaries. Visually and practically, a wide coloured concrete driveways makes sense and is well suited.

These details are discussed during a concrete driveway quote. With our 40 years experience, we can show you what proportion and style will suit with your home.

During a driveway quote, we go over the visual and practical options to help narrow down preferred options. Visually, coloured concrete driveways is the most chosen finish for driveways in the Hills District. The charcoal driveway option is the go to choice as charcoal suits with the large front yard green space that is common with Hills District homes.

Practically, wide coloured concrete driveways also works with the large home footprint of houses in the Hills District. A wide coloured concrete driveway creates proportional space to other building spaces on the property. If there is minimal outdoor space, driveway construction creates clean and useable outdoor space and is one of the most basic home renovations.

What is a Concrete Slab?

Concreting Sydney are concrete experts in all types of driveways and concrete slabs. With the many types of slab pouring options available, we are often asked during a concrete driveway quote what is a concrete slab?

A concrete slab is used in construction as a structural element. Also known as slabs concrete, it is used to create flat horizontal surfaces such as concrete floors, roofs and driveways. Slabs can range from a shelter covering to a practical flat surface.

Slabs concrete is used as it can support heavy loads. Residential driveway slabs or car park slabs are common structures built by us.

concrete slab in backyard with line pump setup ready for pouring

Slabs concrete are created to have top and bottom surfaces parallel with each other. This is an important part of the construction process. As concrete experts we take great care to achieve uniform strong slabs.

A slab usually is concrete pouring on site to a predefined form. Also known as in situ concrete slab construction, it is commonly used for concrete floors and driveways.

Form work for slab pouring is built by us. Form work is made from specialty wooden planks and boards. Plastic and steel forms are also used.

Form work for slab pouring is a type of boxing where wet concrete can be placed into a form. While pouring, the formwork acts as the finished height for the concrete slab. Slab pouring requires a dedicated team on the pouring day to get a flat concrete slab.

After pouring the wet mix concrete is left to cure. Once the concrete has hardened, we then knock off and remove the form work. The correct time to remove the form work depends on the concrete project.

For driveway projects, form work is reusable. As a driveway slab has form work that is on the ground, this makes it easier to remove. The form work is then cleaned in preparation for the next concrete pouring project. Pressure washers are usually used to clean driveway slab form work.

By cleaning slab form work, we can provide consistency in driveway slab edging. It makes concrete pouring for a driveway slab much more accurate. The ability to re-use driveway slab form work reduces the concrete driveway cost compared with other types of slab pouring.

Concrete pouring for a driveway is usually completed in one day by us. This makes concreting a drive one of the most common pouring projects, as concrete driveway costs are much less than other driveway surfaces such as paving.

Once a concrete driveway is poured the slab is complete. There is no need for additional work such as laying cobblestones, slate or travertine on top. By choosing a concrete slab driveway, there is no need to organise multiple tradesmen as we provide an all in one service.

With paving, a concrete base is preferred as the concrete base provides support for the pavers. With this method it still does not stop pavers shifting as pavers need to be laid on a sand base. Also a driveway concrete base does not stop weed growth as the sand provides a place for seeds to germinate and grow on the surface.

This makes the concrete driveway cost advantageous to other paving methods. A concrete slab driveway needs fewer steps to get to the final product. Paving a driveway requires many added steps to get to the stage to lay pavers.

Concreting a Drive

A concrete slab driveway is the most popular form of driveways. Concrete lasts for many years and is a durable finish. Concreting a drive suits as concrete performs well in all types of weather.

partial grass driveway ready to be excavated for new concrete driveway

During a concrete driveway quote, we provide various options with costing. We will find suitable options for your new driveway and look for improved solutions to what you previously have.

As part of the concrete driveway quote process, we will find a tailored solution to suit your needs. This process will determine the concrete driveway cost. The concrete driveway cost is variable from site to site and can include excavation.

We do driveway excavation as part of a all in one service. This means we provide a total inclusive cost for the works. As driveway excavation services are included, we provide a value-added service. We have all the relevant driveway excavation equipment to speedily complete your driveway.

Our skid steer loader is great for driveway excavation as it is compact and maneuverable on residential sites. A skid steer loader reduces the driveway cost as it can complete driveway excavation quickly.

Our skid steer loader has a fast ground speed. Our skid steer loader has a large carrying bucket that is suitable for driveway excavation. It is one of our many excavation equipment that we use to build driveways.

Concrete Driveway Cost

One of the main contributors to the concrete driveway cost is soil removal. We can reduce the driveway cost by reusing the soil on site. These options are discussed during the quote so you can get a total perspective on the scope of your project.

The driveway excavated soil can be used for example to level the backyard or fill garden beds. There are many ways to make use of excess soil. If excess soil can not be used and needs to be taken away, our skid steer loader can quickly cart driveway soil material to tipper trucks. The use of tipper trucks is common during driveway excavation projects.

Removing soil from the driveway site does add to the concrete driveway cost. However since a driveway is the most basic form of concreting, usually there is minimal removal of material as a driveway is usually poured on similar existing ground levels.

excavator on mound during driveway excavation

Driveway excavation mostly involves re shaping the existing ground level. During a concrete driveway quote, we explain which contour options will suit your property.

A skid steer loader during driveway excavation can use its large bucket to flatten and shape the slab base. We also incorporate concrete slab drainage as part of driveway excavation. This reduces the concrete driveway cost, as we can address any site needs in one go.

Concrete slab drainage is important for controlling the water runoff. Concrete slab drainage is particularly important where a slab is located on a low spot on a property. On hilly blocks this will cause the water runoff to pool onto the slab.

Concrete slab drainage is important in slabs such as for home extensions. Slab drainage design for these types of slabs is to divert water away from the concrete slab. We can implement numerous methods for slab drainage. Concrete slab drainage can be as simple as excavating the land around the concrete slab to be lower. This is a good slab drainage option as it takes away the need for concrete slab drainage to incorporate plumbing works to control the water flow.

The simplest concrete slab drainage device is a swale. We can easily build a swale during excavation. A swale works well for concrete slab drainage as it is a surface water drainage device. A swale can take minimal space compared with other slab drainage devices. A swale is a wide and shallow indentation in the ground. A swale slows and directs surface water away to prevent flooding and erosion. With this type of slab drainage device, the surface water slowly gets absorbed naturally into the soil, by spreading the water load this eliminates the need for plumbing hardware.

Swales work well around a concrete slab. It is not visible like other forms of slab drainage. A swale can be made to look as part of the natural landscape with turf incorporated into the swale to maintain a large lawn area.

It is a versatile form of slab drainage as it can also be shaped to create a garden bed look. Another benefit of this type of slab drainage is that it conserves water for watering plants, as surface water is directed to the vegetation.

All About Slabs Concrete

mini excavator digging soil in backyard for pool slab

A concrete slab driveway is a type of an ground slab. We use specialised form work for concreting a drive. Our form work covers long spans which is important for driveway work.

Form work can be rigid timber or made from flexible plastic. Form work for a driveway is usually placed on the outside perimeter. The form work for a driveway slab is supported by the ground it rests on.

We tend to use hardwood timber pegs to hold the formwork in place for concrete pouring. Timber pegs are hammered into the ground. This is important as it keeps form work rigid, level and in place during a drive pour.

The steel collar on timber pegs that you may have seen on construction sites is to increase the strength and durability of the peg. Metal collars also reduce the chance of timber pegs splitting and helps maintain the square shape of the peg.

For slabs concrete, we can also use other anchoring devices to keep form work edge boards in position. Steel form work pins are used in such places where there is minimal space to hammer and secure form work in place. Star pickets can also be used in the same way.

There are instances where slabs concrete does not require form work at all. A semi in ground pool slab is an example where we do not need to place form work. As the slab is placed in a excavated hole under the ground, the perimeter of the excavated hole acts as the form work in these type of slabs. As there is no form work to provide a guide during concrete pouring, we use a laser level to get a semi in ground pool slab flat and to the required height.

Another example where a slab does not need form work is basement storage space slabs. To get a basement concrete slab ready for pouring usually involves excavating and removing the soil from under the house. The brick work foundation walls act as the form work.

Basement concrete slabs are usually built as added storage space for large items. Slab pouring in these types of settings require a level concrete surface. This achieves increased floor space for your home without the need to do extensive home renovations.

We can build and form numerous shapes for slabs. The traditional shapes for concrete slabs are square and rectangle. Square and rectangle concrete slabs are well suited for carport slabs and shed slabs. Slabs concrete is a base for building a structure above it. A flat concrete slab makes it easier to build something onto it such as for spa slabs and basement slabs.

Slabs concrete get its structural strength from the steel reinforcement in the slab. The type of steel reinforcement used for slabs can vary. A concrete slab driveway requires different steel reinforcement specifications to a concrete slab roof.

Concreting a drive, does not require slab pouring with concrete foundations. Concreting a drive such as a plain concrete driveway is the most basic form of slabs concrete. Driveway slabs need less steel reinforcing requirements compared with other types of slabs. This makes driveway slabs cost less than other types of concrete slabs.

If you are after an economical concrete quote, as concrete experts we do numerous plain concrete driveway styles.

Concrete Driveway Repair

Concrete driveway repair may be the best option where only a partial section needs replacing. Driveway repair is usually completed where there is existing plain concrete. Concrete driveway repair is an easy task.

freshly laid plain concrete with barricade tape

As most of the existing plain concrete driveway is kept, modification or repair can be achieved relatively quickly in this form of construction. Repair is done in localised sections of the concrete driveway. It is common as part of our concrete removal Parramatta projects to include concrete driveway repair.

Plain concrete for Parramatta Council driveway crossovers is the standard finish. Where possible minimal concrete driveway repair is preferred as the new concrete can match better with the existing plain concrete.

Concrete removal and repair is conducted in all parts of Parramatta. It is needed to maintain or update public infrastructure within the Parramatta Council area.

Our works in Parramatta also include concrete removal and repair for Sydney Water. Sydney Water mains are sometimes located under Parramatta Council driveways. Concrete removal is needed to replace or service water mains. Afterwards, new driveways are poured for Parramatta Council once the maintenance crew have updated the water infrastructure.

Winston Hills and North Rocks are common places where total concrete driveway removal is needed. In Winston Hills and North Rocks many homes are knocked down and rebuilt. As North Rocks and Winston Hills fall within the Parramatta Council region, approval is needed to rebuild a new driveway. We take care of all Parramatta Council requirements. Once approval is granted, we can then start driveway excavation. As we work with Parramatta Council, we can streamline your driveway build.

New concrete driveways in North Rocks and Winston Hills are designed much wider than traditional sizes for those suburbs. The driveway section that is on council land is finished in plain concrete, Parramatta Council only permits plain concrete for your driveway crossover section. The concrete section inside your boundary does not have to be plain concrete. In North Rocks and Winston Hills, coloured concrete is usually chosen for the driveway part that lies inside the boundary. Charcoal and light grey colour driveways are popular in North Rocks and Winston Hills.

In contrast to Winston Hills and North Rocks concreting areas, Constitution Hill and Wentworthville have different concrete styles. Our concreting Constitution Hill and Wentworthville projects are usually on hilly blocks. New homes are typically built on these hilly blocks with basement car parks. Basement concrete is a common feature for Constitution Hill and Wentworthville.

A new Parramatta Council driveway concrete crossover needs to be built to suit. Vehicular traffic has to enter the basement form the Council driveway crossover. In these types of driveways, the driveway slopes downwards to the basement from the boundary. The parking space in these types of driveways is in the basement instead of on the drive.

Driveway excavation for Constitution Hill and Wentworthville involves not only concrete removal, but also soil removal. As concrete basements usually are two metres below the Parramatta Council driveway crossover, soil removal is part of driveway construction. In Constitution Hill and Wentworthville driveway excavation sites have good rich soil. Driveway excavation can include relocating soil around the property to reduce the concrete driveway cost and keep the fertile soil onsite.

Minor concrete driveway repair work around Parramatta is common in North Rocks and Ermington. Minor repair in these suburbs is usually for concrete that has lifted by large eucalyptus trees.

The strong root system is the common cause. In Ermington this is visible on Parramatta Council footpaths. Concrete removal work is needed to restore the council footpath to a useable condition.

Driveway and footpath excavation can include realignment to provide more space for tree roots to grow. This makes Ermington and North Rocks to have unique shaped footpaths within the Parramatta region.

As many eucalyptus trees in North Rocks and Ermington are located close to Parramatta Council driveways and footpaths, design is influenced by the location of eucalyptus trees.

To alleviate ongoing Parramatta Council infrastructure costs, Parramatta Council driveway and footpath designs can take a nonlinear approach for Ermington and North Rocks.

Parramatta Council concrete designs for Ermington and North Rocks have curved concrete edges to provide more room for tree roots. Concrete footpaths are shaped to curve around tree roots and trunks.

Concrete Driveway North Shore

newly completed black colour stamp driveway

Concrete driveways on the North Shore are typically unique. North Shore driveways are larger than most concrete drive projects in Sydney.

A North Shore concrete driveway can totally change the ability for vehicles to enter a property. Many concrete drives in the northern suburbs have small and narrow driveways. New driveway builds completely change the usability of homes. The driveway makeover usually starts right from the street. Many of our Wahroonga and Killara projects, include concreting from the council driveway road.

In Wahroonga and Killara, concrete driveway infrastructure in these places have not been modernised compared with other North Shore areas.

Building our Wahroonga and Killara projects is often from a clean slate. Many Wahroonga and Killara projects need to identify street entrance positioning. As partners with local governments in the North Shore, creating the best concrete driveway road entrance is the first step in building new driveways.

On many occasions there is no street concrete gutter. Before building the road entrance, a new concrete gutter is built so it aligns with the section of the driveway that is inside the boundary.

Concrete layback and gutter works has to be built specifically as the land terrain is hilly and cannot be standardised as in flat areas of Sydney. For Wahroonga driveways, street dimensions where often built with the natural contours and features of the land. North Shore road grading those days was more flexible.

For Killara this meant many streets maintain the hilly topography of the area as road grading machinery was primitive compared with today. This makes Wahroonga and Killara to have completely different street concrete gutters and laybacks for driveways. Concrete on the North Shore is influenced by the topography.

In Killara, there have been many instances where homes never had a concrete driveway. As there are many steep blocks in Killara, these types of blocks are common for not having a concrete driveway. There was simply no mini excavating machinery at the time. Driveways on the steep blocks were simply built with a gravel driveway.

Driveways in Killara has slowly developed. Killara homeowners have had to deal with rutted and eroded driveways longer than other North Shore areas.

When we concrete a driveway in Killara on a block for the first time, it has increased home values considerably. Even with the increased home values, it changes so much the way homeowners use their home that many decide not to sell.

As vehicles have become lower over the years, it is safer to concrete as it provides a durable even surface. There have been many instances in Killara where vehicles has bottomed out on a rock boulder. Gravel driveways are being discontinued and being replaced with concrete driveways.

For concrete in Killara, we generally recommend a minimum two and a half metre wide driveway. This width gives sufficient room to navigate your vehicle on slope blocks which is common in Killara.

Working with Ku-ring-gai Council on concrete driveway projects, we have modernised many driveways and streets. We have improved many sites with our experience concreting in the Ku-ring-gai region. We work with Ku-ring-gai Council to create improved driveway and footpath spaces.

Concrete driveways on the North Shore can sometimes become a mini road building project. Our Wahroonga projects are some of the largest on the North Shore. Wahroonga projects are usually completed after extensive home renovation. The concrete driveway brief is usually to create heritage North Shore concreting styles.

As concrete on the North Shore is a site specific non standardised from of concreting, this requires local North Shore knowledge. Wahroonga is a good example where concrete has varied requirements.

Wahroonga sites have a high degree of layout variation than most North Shore localities. To complete a concrete driveway design for Wahroonga is to incorporate home location. For Wahroonga this looks at making the grand heritage federation homes of the suburb work with modern road infrastructure.

With the manor style homes of Wahroonga, homes are represented differently to today’s standard. Wahroonga homes can be at the front or rear of blocks. Many homes in the past where self sufficient estates. Driveways did not exist as we know today. Sometimes a heritage gate is the only marker to work with when building a new concrete driveway.

Building driveways in Wahroonga, requires detailed excavation. As many homes previously had small dams or ponds for irrigation of crops, concrete slab drainage is important for this locality. Driveway excavation may include altering surface runoff away from low spots on the property to prevent flooding. Driveway excavation rectifies past drainage practices.

New concrete driveways usually solves many onsite legacy land uses. For Wahroonga, this can include eliminating gravel footpaths that crisscross each other. Gravel footpaths originally lead to many parts of a block. For example, gravel footpaths led to wells, fruit orchards and out houses. When building a new concrete driveway, gravel footpaths are usually removed. Driveway excavation removes gravel footpaths and incorporates those spaces into the existing landscape.
